Meetings: Tuesdays after school until 4 p.m. *subject to change*
Mitchell’s Debate Club is a program run through Tulsa Debate League lead by Ms. Arnault and Ms. Keeter. We adopted the program in the 2018/2019 school year starting with only about 10 students and have grown our program to support nearly 40 students. Typically, this extracurricular activity runs from September through February and is split into two teams; a Fall Team and a Winter Team. Students apply through a paper application at the start of the season, and, if accepted, are expected to attend a one hour weekly meeting in which we work on building our debate skills. All debaters attend three Saturday tournaments per season at a local middle school where they have the opportunity to show off their hard work against an opposing team from another school in front of a judge. Not only do students gain transferable skills to the real world, they have the opportunity to meet young people across the district, gain access to leaders within our community, and win medals and trophies! Students who attend all six tournaments and consistently attend practices are 90% more likely to graduate on time, 86% more likely to enroll in college, and 80% more likely to graduate from college, according to the Tulsa Debate League. Our debaters learn how to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage in the world.
